Hackathon Overview

Over the course of a weekend, UNF students collaborated to work on unique problems impacting youth development. Students were provided with the tools, support, and data needed so that they can write the code to right the world.

Participating students received mentorship from AWS, NLP Logix, CapTech, First Tee, PGA Tour, and UNF experts. Participants were expected to use their skills in the problem domain, programming, data mining, machine learning, statistical analysis, and visualization techniques to solve the problem. Hackathon participants were expected to form a team with a maximum of three to work on the hackathon problems and datasets.

David Berglund, CEO of Itasca Labs, recorded and produced a video highlighting the hackathon event. LinkedIn post containing the video can be accessed at     LinkedIn Post

Social Good Partner

First Tee provided two problem areas and relevant datasets for student teams to work during the hackathon.

First Tee is a youth development organization that enables kids to build the strength of character that empowers them through a lifetime of new challenges. By seamlessly integrating the game of golf with a life skills curriculum, First Tee creates active learning experiences that build inner strength, self-confidence, and resilience that kids can carry to everything they do.

Use Case #1: Engaging Youth

Enhancing Participant Retention in Ages 12 and Older.

Use Case #2: Equitable Expansion

Reaching Underserved and Underrepresented Communities.

Technology Partner

Amazon Web Services (AWS) provided access to necessary cloud services for participants to solve hackathon problems. Participants had access to the following AWS resources: QuickSight, Sagemaker Canvas, Glue Data Brew, S3, IAM, and Athena. AWS was the lead organizer for hackathon meetings, and covered the costs for drinks and snacks during the hackathon days.

Award Sponsors

NLP Logix is a custom artificial intelligence and machine-learning solutions provider that focuses on automating business processes across many industries. NLP Logix sponsored the first-place award.

CapTech is a technology consulting firm focused on defining and delivering what’s next for organizations. CapTech sponsored the second-place award.

Dr. Umapathy, Co-Director of FL-DSSG, sponsored the third-place award.

Hackathon Hosts

FL-DSSG led the planning and execution of hackathon event logistics. FL-DSSG covered food costs that occurred during the hackathon.

2023 AI4Good hackathon was hosted in building 15 at the University of North Florida. UNF School of Computing provided spaces and infrastructures for hosting the hackathon. UNF Information Technology Services assisted with setting up AWS cloud accounts for participants. UNF CIRT Video Tech assisted with microphones and speakers for presentations.
