2024 AI for Good Hackathon

AI for Good is a 24-hour hackathon bringing together student teams, and partners LISC Jacksonville, The Link, Google Cloud, UNF, and NLP Logix to build solutions that drive social good benefits.

Hackathon Overview
Over the course of a weekend, UNF and Jacksonville University students collaborated to work on unique problems impacting youth development. Students were provided with the tools, support, and data needed so that they can write the code to right the world.

Participating students received mentorship from LISC Jacksonville, NLP Logix, PGA Tour, CGI, Medical Solutions, CSX, and UNF experts. Participants were expected to use their skills in the problem domain, programming, data mining, machine learning, statistical analysis, and visualization techniques to solve the problem. Hackathon participants were expected to form a team with a maximum of three to work on the hackathon problems and datasets.
Due to Hurricane Helene, Friday activities were cancelled. The hackathon began on Saturday, September 28, at 9 AM and ended at 4 PM on Sunday.
Social Good Problem Cases
Hackathon participants were provided with two problem cases and expected to solve one of them.
Problem Case #1: Rental Scams
Detect nefarious actors in online housing search sites and estimate financial damages to victims in Duval County.
Problem Case #2: Heirs Property
Identify and estimate households vulnerable to heirs’ property issues in Duval County.
Technology Partner
Google Cloud provided access to necessary cloud services for participants to solve hackathon problems. Participants had access to the following Google Cloud resources: BigQuery, AutoML, DataPrep, Cloud Storage, Identity and Access Management (IAM), and Looker. Google Cloud was the lead organizer for hackathon meetings and covered the costs for drinks and snacks during the hackathon days.

Winners
Gold Award
Team(Marion Forest) focused on detecting and flagging MLS listings that can be considered fraud at 95% confidence.
Silver Award
Hackstreet Boys team (Hunter Ford, Aryan Shirmohammadi, and Antony Malesevic) developed a NEAT Algorithm to detect anomalies in the MLS listings.
Bronze Award
Ospreys team (Mahmoud Elbatouty, Walid Kambagha, and Ahmed Sayed) used ML packages and Tableau to identify properties that are at risk for the sale of tax certificates.
4th Place
Osprey Security team (Edgar Quinones, Delali Simpson, and Alex Ramudo).
5th Place

Evaluation Criteria
Each participating team will be evaluated on their model performance and presentation of the results. Winners of the hackathon will be determined based on the below evaluation factor weightings and scores received.

5 = Excellent presentation on all counts
4 = Very good presentation with minor issues
3 = Pitch can be significantly improved but is satisfactory overall
2 = Pitch is incomplete and severely lacking
